Why Does God Allow Suffering?

This is one of the hardest questions many of us ask. If God is loving, why does He allow pain, loss, sickness, or trials in our lives? I have asked this myself in moments of tears and confusion, wondering why God did not step in the way I wanted Him to.

The Bible reminds us that suffering was never part of God’s original design. When sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, brokenness, death, and pain entered too (Romans 5:12). But God did not leave us without hope. Through Christ, He entered into our suffering to redeem it and to use it for His glory and our good.

God allows suffering for reasons that may be hidden to us, but He reveals some truths in His Word:

  • Suffering draws us closer to God.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalm 34:18 ). When everything else falls away, we discover that He is enough.
  • Suffering shapes our faith.
“When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” (James 1:2-3). Trials refine us like fire refines gold, making our faith more genuine.
  • Suffering reminds us this world is not our home.
Every ache and tear makes us long for heaven where God will wipe away every tear and there will be no more death or pain (Revelation 21:4).

Though it may not always make sense now, we can trust that God never wastes suffering. Even what the enemy means for evil, God can turn for good (Genesis 50:20).

Jesus Himself suffered greatly. He was betrayed, mocked, beaten, and crucified. He knows what pain feels like. When you cry, you do not cry alone. Christ is with you, and He promises to never leave you.

So why does God allow suffering? We may not always understand fully, but we can hold onto this truth: suffering may be for a season, but God’s love is eternal. Through suffering, He draws us deeper into His presence and reminds us of the hope we have in Christ.

Reflection Questions:
  • Have you ever seen God bring good out of a season of suffering in your life?
  • What truth from Scripture helps you endure trials today?

Prayer:

Lord, in my moments of pain and confusion, remind me that You are with me. Help me trust that You are working even when I cannot see it. Give me strength to endure and faith to believe that Your plan is greater than my pain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
