INTRODUCTION
This is one of the most beautiful and tender miracles in the Gospels. At first glance, it appears to be a simple healing story, A woman touches Jesus’ garment and is healed. But when we study it deeply, we discover that this miracle is about much more than physical healing.It is about faith in prolonged suffering, shame and isolation, ritual uncleanness, the compassion of Christ,and the Gospel itself. This miracle reveals not only what Jesus can do but who Jesus is.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The story occurs in Capernaum. Jesus has just returned from the region of the Gerasenes, where He delivered the demon-possessed man. A large crowd immediately surrounds Him.In the middle of this crowd comes, Jairus’ twelve-year-old daughter is dying. Jesus begins walking to Jairus’ house. Then everything stops. An unnamed woman touches Him. Mark intentionally interrupts Jairus’ story because these two miracles are meant to be read together.
LITERARY CONTEXT
WHY ARE THESE TWO MIRACLES TOGETHER?
One of the most beautiful features of Mark’s Gospel is that he often uses a literary technique called Intercalation (commonly called a “Markan Sandwich”)
Mark begins one story, interrupts it with another, and then returns to the first story. eg: Mark 3 , Mark 11
The Structure in Mark 5
Story 1 Begins:
Jairus comes to Jesus because his daughter is dying.
(Mark 5:21–24)
↓
Story 2 Interrupts:
The woman with the issue of blood touches Jesus and is healed.
(Mark 5:25–34)
↓
Story 1 Resumes:
Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead.
(Mark 5:35–43)
Mark intentionally places these two miracles together because they reveal deeper truths about who Jesus is.
WHO WAS THIS WOMAN?
Mark never tells us her name. For twelve years, she had likely been known only by her condition “The woman with the issue of blood.” But Jesus would call her “Daughter.” Her identity changes.
WHAT WAS HER CONDITION?
Mark 5:25, “A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding.”
The means continuous, ongoing hemorrhaging. We do not know the exact medical condition.
What we do know is, she had suffered.
Mark deliberately uses the word, “suffered.”
THE PHYSICAL SUFFERING
For twelve years she endured weakness, pain, exhaustion, likely anemia, physical decline. This was not a temporary illness. This was a chronic condition.
THE SOCIAL SUFFERING
Leviticus 15:25–27
According to the Law, A woman with continual bleeding was ceremonially unclean.
This meant anyone she touched became unclean, anything she sat on became unclean, anyone touching her became unclean until evening.
What Did This Mean Practically?
For twelve years she may have experienced social isolation, exclusion from worship, broken relationships, loneliness, public shame. Many scholars believe she may have been unable to participate fully in synagogue life, embrace loved ones, engage in normal community life. She was living as an outsider.
Jairus has enjoyed twelve years with his daughter. One is losing life. One has been growing in life. Their stories meet at Jesus’ feet.
WHY DOES SHE APPROACH SECRETLY?
Because she is desperate, ashamed, afraid.
She thinks, “If I can just touch His robe, I will be healed.”
WHY DOES JESUS CALL HER FORWARD?
1. To bring her from secrecy to relationship.
2. To publicly restore her.
3. To restore her dignity.
4. To deepen her faith.
THE ONLY WOMAN JESUS CALLS “DAUGHTER”
Mark 5:34 “Daughter, your faith has made you well.” This is the only recorded instance in the Gospels where Jesus directly addresses a woman as Daughter. She had likely lived twelve years without belonging. Jesus restores her into God’s family.
WHAT DOES “YOUR FAITH HAS MADE YOU WELL” MEAN?
Her faith did not magically heal her. Jesus healed her. Faith was simply the instrument that brought her to Christ.
THE GOSPEL PICTURE
This miracle beautifully pictures salvation. We come to Christ unclean, ashamed, broken, unable to fix ourselves. And instead of our uncleanness contaminating Him, His holiness transforms us. Under the Law If she touched someone, they became unclean. But when she touches Jesus, she becomes clean. Grace moves in the opposite direction.
WHY DOES JESUS DELAY JAIRUS?
This is one of the deepest lessons. The delay causes Jairus’ daughter to die. Yet the delay reveals, Jesus is not merely healer. He is Lord over death. Sometimes God delays because He intends to reveal something greater.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
- What have I been carrying for years?
- Where have I exhausted my own strength?
- Do I believe Jesus sees my hidden pain?
- Am I willing to come to Him in faith, even if trembling?
The woman spent twelve years suffering, all her money, all her strength.
Yet one touch of Christ changed everything. Not because there was power in touching a garment. But because there was power in the One wearing it. The miracle of the woman with the issue of blood is not ultimately about a healing. It is about a Savior who welcomes the unclean, restores the outcast, sees hidden suffering, and calls broken people His daughters and sons.
