scripture focus : Mark 4: 35 – 41
THE GEOGRAPHICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Sea of Galilee isn’t actually a sea, it’s a freshwater lake.
It is about 21 km long, about 13 km wide , approximately 208 m below sea level, making it the lowest freshwater lake on earth.
It sits in a basin surrounded by steep hills and mountains. Cold air from the surrounding heights collides with the warm air over the lake, creating sudden, violent storms that can appear without warning. Experienced fishermen still describe these storms today.
This means the disciples’ fear was not irrational. Several of them were professional fishermen. If they believed they were going to die, this was an extraordinarily dangerous storm.
THE CONTEXT OF THE STORY
Mark says “On that day…” (Mark 4:35)
Jesus had spent the entire day teaching, preaching, healing, ministering to crowds.
He was physically exhausted.
THE HUMANITY OF CHRIST
Mark gives us an unusual detail “Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.” (Mark 4:38)
Why include the pillow?
Because Mark wants us to see Jesus is fully human. He experiences weariness, fatigue, physical limitations.
The One who created the universe is sleeping from exhaustion.
WHY DID JESUS LEAD THEM INTO THE STORM?
Jesus said, “Let us go over to the other side.”
The storm did not happen because:
- they were disobedient,
- they were outside God’s will,
- they were disobedient,
They entered the storm because they obeyed Jesus.
Lesson:
Sometimes obedience leads us directly into difficult circumstances.
Being in a storm does not mean:
- God abandoned you.
- You missed His will.
- You did something wrong.
- Sometimes Jesus intentionally leads us into storms to reveal something greater.
WHY WAS JESUS SLEEPING?
The disciples cry “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
How many of us have prayed something similar?
- Lord, do You see this?
- Do You care?
- Why are You silent?
The sleeping Christ often feels like the silent God. Yet His silence did not mean His absence.
Jesus slept because He was completely at peace. He knewHis Father was sovereign, The storm was under divine control, His mission would not end in that boat.
THE DISCIPLES’ FEAR
They feared the storm.
After Jesus calms it, they fear Him.
Mark says, “They became very much afraid.” (Mark 4:41)
“They feared a great fear.” The greater terror became, Who is this man?
Who controls the sea?
In the Old Testament, Only God.
- Psalm 89:9
“You rule the raging of the sea.” - Psalm 107:29
“He made the storm be still.” - Job 38:8-11
God alone sets boundaries for the sea.
Then Jesus does exactly what Yahweh does.
He speaks and creation obeys.
In Scripture, the sea often symbolizes chaos, danger, evil, disorder.
Jesus standing over the sea and commanding it demonstrates He has authority over all chaos. Nothing is outside His sovereign rule.
THE JOURNEY TO THE OTHER SIDE
Jesus is crossing into Gentile territory. The next miracle is, “Jesus heals a man with a demon”
The storm happens on the way to a divine appointment. Sometimes storms occur, not because God is stopping us, but because He is taking us somewhere.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What storm has God led me into?
- Have I mistaken God’s silence for His absence?
- Do I fear my circumstances more than I trust Christ?
- Is my faith in Jesus because He calms storms or because He is Lord over them?
The greatest miracle in Mark 4 is not that Jesus calmed the storm.
It is that the disciples discovered that the One sleeping in their boat was the sovereign Lord of creation.
