Winning the War in My Mind: How God Is Teaching Me to Overcome Rejection and Renew My Thoughts

A Season I Didn’t Understand

For the past 8 months, I’ve been in a season I didn’t fully understand. Not loud. Not obvious. But deeply personal.

A quiet battle within my heart, one filled with feelings of rejection, unworthiness, and the constant question of whether I am truly loved by the people around me.

I started noticing a shift in how I saw everything. Moments that were once neutral began to feel heavy. Silence started to feel like distance. And small things began to feel like rejection. Without even realizing it…I had started seeing my life through a negative lens.

And the hardest part was , I didn’t know where to begin.

What I’ve come to understand is this:

Our minds don’t just think ,they form patterns.

Over time, repeated hurt creates:

  • beliefs
  • expectations
  • emotional responses

Patterns that try to protect us from pain…but end up keeping us trapped in it.

I found myself:

  • expecting rejection
  • overthinking situations
  • assuming the worst

And slowly, it was shaping not just how I felt…but who I was becoming.

Because when you believe something long enough, you begin to see it everywhere, even when it isn’t there.

There were moments I considered seeking help elsewhere. But deep in my heart, I knew this;  Only Jesus can truly transform a heart and renew a mind.

Not just manage thought, not just give temporary relief but bring true transformation.

“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”  Romans 12:2

And yet, even knowing this…I still struggled. Because no one really teaches you how to heal from this.

People say:

  • “Pray about it”
  • “Read your Bible”
  • “Give it to God”

And while those things are true,  they can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to begin.

I remember searching:

  • Googling scriptures
  • Looking for answers
  • Hoping something would change instantly

But it didn’t. And I had to accept this truth, You don’t undo months of thinking with one prayer.

Because our minds are shaped over time and they are renewed over time too.

Then I came across a question that changed everything, “After you pray… do you wait for God to respond?”

And I realized something, I was talking to God…but I wasn’t listening. I would pray, pour out my heart, give thanks…and then move on.

But I never paused. I never waited for Him to speak.

So I started doing something different. After I pray… I pause.

No rushing. No distractions.Just stillness.

“Be still, and know that I am God…” Psalm 46:10

At first, it felt unfamiliar. But over time, I began to recognize how God was speaking to me.

I asked God specifically:

  • Speak to me through Your Word.
  • Confirm things through sermons and biblical teachings.

And He answered.

Through:

  • scriptures that spoke directly into my situation
  • sermons that felt like they were meant just for me
  • teachings that revealed patterns I didn’t even realize I had

And slowly… things began to shift.

I realized something powerful,

  • The issue wasn’t just what I was feeling
  • it was what I was believing.

Because every emotion I felt was connected to a thought I kept repeating.

And not every thought… was true.

Steps to renewing your mind:

1. Identify the Thought

Pay attention to what repeats in your mind.

For me, it sounded like:

  • “I’m not enough”
  • “I’m not really loved”
  • “I’m always overlooked”

2. Recognize the Lie

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Not every thought is truth.

If a thought produces:

  • fear
  • insecurity
  • rejection
  • anxiety

…it’s not from God.

3. Replace It with Truth

You don’t fight thoughts by ignoring them. You replace them with the Word.

Example Transformation

Old Thought:
“I’m not loved. I’m always rejected.”

Truth:

“I have loved you… with an everlasting love.”  Jeremiah 31:3

Old Thought:

“I’m not enough.”

Truth:

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”  2 Corinthians 12:9

I’ve learned this, truth becomes powerful when you speak it.

“Faith comes from hearing… the Good News about Christ.”  Romans 10:17

So instead of silently believing the lie… I declare:

  • I am loved by God.
  • I am chosen.
  • I am enough in Christ.

This is not instant but it is transformational.

Because the same way your mind learned patterns…it can unlearn them.

“Let God transform you… by changing the way you think.” Romans 12:2

Now, I don’t just pray and leave.

I stay. I sit. I listen.

“The Holy Spirit… will teach you everything.” John 14:26

Scriptures That Are Renewing My Mind

These have become anchors for me in this season:

  • Romans 12:2 — God is renewing my mind
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 — I can take thoughts captive
  • Philippians 4:8 — I choose what I focus on
  • Philippians 4:6–7 — God gives me peace
  • Jeremiah 31:3 — I am deeply loved
  • Psalm 34:18 — God is close to me in pain
  • Psalm 147:3 — God is healing my heart

Let this be your starting point:

  • Start with one thought
  • Replace it with one scripture
  • Speak it daily
  • Sit with God after you pray

And let Him meet you there.

Healing doesn’t happen overnight. But it does happen when you stay with God. This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about surrender and consistency.

  • You do the work of renewing your mind
  • And God does the work of transforming your heart

Prayer

Lord, You see every hidden place in our hearts. Every thought, every wound, every pattern. Teach us to recognize what is not from You. Give us the courage to replace lies with truth.Help us to not only speak to You but to be still and listen. Renew our minds. Heal our hearts. And remind us daily that we are loved, chosen, and enough in You.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen. (pause & listen)
