Growing in Christ 🌱 Day 20 : Persevering in Growth

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith – Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT)

The writer of Hebrews paints the Christian life as a race—not a quick sprint, but a long-distance run that requires focus, endurance, and perseverance. We are not running alone. There is a “great cloud of witnesses”—those who have gone before us in faith, reminding us that the journey is possible and that God is faithful.

The call here is twofold:

  • Lay aside every weight and sin—anything that slows us down, whether sin or distraction.
  • Run with endurance—pressing forward in faith, not by our own strength, but by fixing our eyes on Jesus.

Jesus is described as the “champion” or “author and perfecter of our faith.” He began the work in us at salvation and promises to bring it to completion. Our perseverance flows from His finished work at the cross and His ongoing work in our lives through the Holy Spirit.

Reflection

Growth in Christ isn’t about speed—it’s about endurance. Some days the race feels smooth, and other days it feels uphill and exhausting. But every step we take with our eyes fixed on Jesus draws us closer to His likeness.

To persevere means letting go of what hinders us—worry, bitterness, old habits, or misplaced priorities—and choosing to trust Him to carry us forward. Just as an athlete strips away unnecessary weight to run freely, we too must cast off anything that entangles our hearts.

The beauty of this race is that it is already won in Christ. Our job is to remain faithful, steady, and unwavering, knowing He is both our strength and our destination.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me to run the race of faith. Help me to lay aside every weight and sin that slows me down. Teach me to persevere with endurance, even when the journey feels long and hard. Fix my eyes on Jesus, my perfect example and source of strength. May my life bring glory to You as I press on toward the finish. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
